Opel Astra:

The Opel Astra is a compact car/small family car developed and produced by the German automaker Opel since 1991, currently at its sixth generation. It was first launched in September 1991 as a direct replacement to the Opel Kadett. As of 2025, the car slots between the smaller Corsa supermini and the larger Frontera subcompact crossover SUV.
Initially, the Astra was available in hatchback, saloon, and estate forms. A panel van and a convertible also appeared in the early 1990s. These body styles were later followed by a coupé in 2004, and the sporty Astra OPC appeared in 2005. The Twin Top retractable hardtop convertible replaced the soft top convertible in 2006, while the Caravan was renamed to Astra Sports Tourer since 2009....(Read more on Wikipedia)

1.4 Ecotec 16V (90 Hp) Automatic Verdict:

Rating 3 stars

Performance Verdict

Struggles with the weight of the Caravan, especially with the automatic transmission, leading to slow acceleration.

Fuel Economy

Poor fuel economy for a 1.4L engine, as the automatic gearbox works harder to compensate for the lack of power.

Best Use Case: Strictly city driving, very light loads.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Spacious and practical interior with large boot capacity
  • • Robust and generally reliable mechanicals
  • • Comfortable ride quality, especially on longer journeys
  • • Wide range of engine options to suit different needs
  • • Good value for money on the used market

Cons:

  • • Some engines can feel underpowered, especially with automatic transmissions
  • • Interior design is functional but lacks flair
  • • Older models may suffer from rust issues
  • • Fuel economy can be poor on larger petrol engines with automatic gearboxes
  • • Euro NCAP safety rating is average by modern standards
