Toyota Land Cruiser:
The Toyota Land Cruiser , also sometimes spelt as LandCruiser, is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is Toyota's longest running series of models. As of 2019, the sales of the Land Cruiser totalled more than 10 million units worldwide.
Production of the first generation of the Land Cruiser began in 1951. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon and cab chassis body styles. The Land Cruiser's reliability and longevity have led to huge popularity, especially in Australia, where it is the best-selling body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle. J105 Overview:
Toyota Land Cruiser (J105). With 280 Nm of torque, it offers ample pulling power. At around 2360 kg, it’s on the heavier side. All‑wheel drive provides excellent grip, ideal for off‑road use. The top speed reaches 155 km/h. A sport utility vehicle offering higher ground clearance and versatile cargo space. With seating for 8, it’s perfect for larger families.
Performance Verdict
The naturally aspirated 1HZ diesel engine is a legendary workhorse, prioritizing extreme reliability and simplicity over outright performance. Acceleration is leisurely, but it offers consistent, low-end torque for utility and off-road tasks.
Fuel Economy
Fuel economy is moderate for a large, heavy 4x4 of its era, but it's not efficient by modern standards. Its simplicity often translates to lower maintenance costs in the long run.
Best Use Case:
Heavy-duty utility, remote expedition travel, agricultural use, and situations where ultimate reliability and ease of repair are paramount over speed.
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
- • Unrivaled reliability and durability, especially the 1HZ engine
- • Exceptional off-road capability and ruggedness
- • Spacious interior with 8-seat capacity
- • Strong resale value and cult following
- • Simple, robust mechanicals for easy field repairs
Cons:
- • Poor fuel economy across the range
- • Dated interior design and lack of modern amenities/safety features
- • Naturally aspirated diesel (1HZ) is very slow
- • Heavy steering and body roll on paved roads
- • Drum rear brakes on some trims are less effective than discs
