The Subaru Forester is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.
The Forester was first introduced as the Streega concept at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show and became available for sale in Japan in February 1997, reaching the U. S. market later that year for the 1998 model year. As one of the first crossover SUVs, it was reportedly inspired by Volkswagen. Built in the style of a station wagon, the Forester featured a taller stance, higher H-point seating, and a standard all-wheel drive drivetrain. No doubt the '19+ Forester's are nicer on all accounts and have more features/tech, but that '16 looks pretty good really. The full workup maintenance at 68k miles is a big plus. The last '21 listed has too many accidents for the price to be that high so I would scratch it.

I can't relate when people say they have issues with their Subarus. I keep up on regular maintenance, and my Forester just keeps going and going without skipping a beat. If you are interested in an all wheel drive, expect:
Your share of drive train problems, since they have 2 or 3 x the number of parts, bearings, shafts, etc.
Your share of tire costs. Yes, all wheel drive requires new sets of 4 tires, every time, or you destroy your drivetrain.

2016 with over 180k miles and besides tires and brakes the only thing I have had to replace is a section of the exhaust (I live in a salt heavy area). I do follow the recommended mx intervals and my only chronic problem is occasionally the touch screen will lock until I restart the car.
My goal is 250k and I think I am well on track to getting there without drama.

My 21 Outback has had the transmission and oil pan seal replaced. The radio was awful until the latest update. It is currently in the shop getting the window motors replaced. Which is better for you is going to depend on what's more important (cargo/horsepower vs gas mileage, really), but the Subaru reliability concerns around here are overblown.
