Rating 4 stars

Performance Verdict

While less powerful than the 4.2L petrol, the 2.8L turbo diesel (RD28T) offers strong torque at lower RPMs, making it highly effective for off-road driving and general utility.

Fuel Economy

Significantly better fuel economy than the petrol engines, making it a more practical choice for daily driving and longer journeys, though still not class-leading by modern standards.

Best Use Case: Overlanding, daily driving, and situations where a balance of off-road capability and reasonable running costs is desired.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Exceptional off-road capability and ruggedness
  • • Legendary reliability and durability
  • • Spacious interior and large cargo capacity
  • • Strong towing capacity
  • • Simple, robust mechanicals for easy maintenance

Cons:

  • • Poor fuel economy, especially with petrol engines
  • • Unrefined on-road manners compared to modern SUVs
  • • Lack of modern safety features and creature comforts
  • • High running costs due to fuel consumption and parts for older vehicles
  • • Basic interior design and materials
