4.2 D (Y60GR) (116 Hp) Verdict:

Rating 4 stars

Performance Verdict

The naturally aspirated 4.2L TD42 diesel is a legendary workhorse, offering immense low-end torque crucial for serious off-roading and heavy towing, though on-road acceleration is leisurely.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is moderate for a large, heavy 4x4 of its era, but not efficient by modern standards. Expect single-digit L/100km figures under typical driving conditions.

Best Use Case: Extreme off-roading, heavy-duty towing, remote expeditions, agricultural work.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Unrivaled off-road capability and ruggedness
  • • Exceptional mechanical reliability and durability (especially TD42)
  • • Simple, easy-to-maintain mechanics
  • • Strong aftermarket support for modifications
  • • High towing capacity

Cons:

  • • Poor on-road performance and acceleration
  • • High fuel consumption by modern standards
  • • Lack of modern safety features and creature comforts
  • • Noisy and unrefined cabin experience
  • • Prone to rust in certain areas
