Ford Probe:

The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé manufactured and marketed by Ford for model years 1988-1997 over two generations. The Probe was a byproduct of Ford's collaboration with its Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform of the Mazda Capella.
Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Impulse, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. 3.0 i V6 (147 Hp) Verdict:

Rating 7 stars

Performance Verdict

Matching the GT's peak horsepower at 147 Hp, the 3.0 i V6 offers a different character. It provides smoother power delivery and potentially more low-end torque, ideal for cruising, though it might feel less urgent than the turbocharged 2.2 GT.

Fuel Economy

A V6 engine of this displacement typically results in higher fuel consumption compared to an inline-four, especially in urban settings. Expect slightly worse economy than the 2.2 GT, despite similar power output.

Best Use Case: Long-distance cruising, drivers who prefer the smoothness and sound of a V6, and those looking for a more refined driving experience.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Sleek, aerodynamic styling that still turns heads
  • • Engaging handling and ride dynamics (especially GT models)
  • • Practical hatchback design with good cargo space
  • • Reliable Mazda-derived powertrains
  • • Affordable entry into a classic sporty coupe market

Cons:

  • • Interior plastics and design are dated by modern standards
  • • Rear seats are cramped for adults
  • • Limited safety features compared to contemporary vehicles
  • • Some parts can be harder to find due to age
  • • Fuel economy can be high for the V6 and spirited GT driving
