The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.

It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. 2.4 20V (140 Hp) Automatic Verdict:

Rating 2 stars

Performance Verdict

Significantly underpowered for a stretch limousine. Performance will be sluggish, struggling with inclines and full passenger loads, making it best suited for very relaxed, low-speed urban duties.

Fuel Economy

Despite lower power, this engine will work harder to move the heavy limousine, potentially leading to similar or even worse real-world fuel economy than the 170 Hp variant, especially on highways.

Best Use Case: Budget-conscious luxury transport for city driving where minimal acceleration and a very relaxed pace are acceptable.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Exceptional interior space and comfort due to the stretch conversion
  • • Volvo's renowned reputation for safety (based on standard S80)
  • • Refined and smooth ride quality, ideal for passenger transport
  • • Understated luxury appeal, distinct from German rivals
  • • Generally reliable base engines and components

Cons:

  • • Engines are generally underpowered for the vehicle's significant weight
  • • High fuel consumption, especially with the smaller engines working harder
  • • Challenging maneuverability and parking due to extended length
  • • Limited aftermarket support for specialized stretch components
  • • Potentially higher maintenance costs for unique limousine parts
