2.8 GR (129 Hp) Automatic Verdict:

Rating 2 stars

Performance Verdict

The automatic transmission further highlights the engine's lack of power, making it feel very sluggish, especially with a load or on inclines.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is slightly worse than the manual version due to the automatic transmission's inefficiencies, offering little benefit over petrol.

Best Use Case: Urban driving where manual shifting is undesirable, light duty.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Exceptional off-road capability
  • • Legendary reliability (especially TD42 and TB48 engines)
  • • Spacious interior and cargo capacity
  • • Strong towing capacity
  • • Durable and robust construction

Cons:

  • • High fuel consumption (petrol engines)
  • • Limited on-road refinement and handling
  • • Dated interior design and technology
  • • Some diesel engines (early ZD30, RD28) had reliability issues
  • • Lack of modern safety features
