For its entire production, the Mountaineer was assembled by Ford at its Louisville Assembly facility ; prior to 2007, additional production was sourced from St. Louis Assembly. 4.0 V6 (210 Hp) Automatic Verdict:

Rating 4 stars

Performance Verdict

Provides adequate power for daily driving and light family duties. Can feel strained when fully loaded or attempting significant towing, but generally competent.

Fuel Economy

Slightly better fuel economy than the V8, but still relatively poor by modern standards. Running costs remain significant.

Best Use Case: Daily commuting, light family hauling, or general utility where V8 power isn't strictly necessary and a slight fuel economy advantage is desired.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Spacious and comfortable interior for families
  • • Strong V8 engine option provides excellent towing capability
  • • Good value on the used market
  • • Available AWD for improved traction
  • • Smooth ride quality for an SUV of its era

Cons:

  • • Poor fuel economy across all engine options
  • • Some known reliability issues (e.g., V6 timing chain, transmission)
  • • Dated interior design and materials by modern standards
  • • Large turning circle can make maneuvering difficult
  • • Braking performance is adequate but not exceptional
