I Station Wagon (facelift 1958) Overview:
DeSoto Firesweep (I Station Wagon (facelift 1958)). With 522 Nm of torque, it offers ample pulling power. Rear‑wheel drive offers dynamic handling and sporty feedback. A car with an extended rear cargo area, combining passenger comfort with increased storage. With seating for 6, it’s perfect for larger families.
Performance Verdict
Delivers the same strong 295 Hp as other PowerPack versions. The 2-speed PowerFlite transmission, while smooth, is less advanced than the 3-speed TorqueFlite, potentially impacting overall acceleration feel and flexibility.
Fuel Economy
As with all 5.7 V8s from this era, fuel consumption is high. The 2-speed PowerFlite might slightly affect highway cruising efficiency compared to a 3-speed, but overall economy remains poor.
Best Use Case:
Cruising and showcasing the top-tier power, suitable for those prioritizing raw output over transmission sophistication.
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
- • Powerful V8 engines for the era
- • Spacious and comfortable interior
- • Distinctive classic American styling
- • Smooth automatic transmissions (especially TorqueFlite)
- • Good for highway cruising
Cons:
- • Very poor fuel economy
- • Lack of modern safety features
- • Soft suspension leads to vague handling
- • Parts availability can be challenging
- • Large size makes city driving and parking difficult
