4.1 (116 Hp) Tip-Toe Shift Verdict:

Rating 4 stars

Performance Verdict

The 4.1-liter inline-six engine provided adequate power for comfortable cruising, delivering 116 Hp and 282 Nm of torque. Paired with the innovative Tip-Toe Shift automatic transmission, it offered smooth, relaxed acceleration suitable for family travel, though not sporty.

Fuel Economy

Given its large displacement and carbureted design from the early 1950s, fuel economy would have been a significant drawback by modern standards. Expect relatively high fuel consumption, typical for vehicles of this era.

Best Use Case: Leisurely highway cruising and comfortable city driving, ideal for those seeking a classic American driving experience.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Classic American styling and presence
  • • Comfortable and spacious interior for six passengers
  • • Smooth-operating Tip-Toe Shift automatic transmission (for its time)
  • • Robust and relatively simple inline-six engine design
  • • Soft, compliant ride quality ideal for cruising

Cons:

  • • Very poor fuel economy by modern standards
  • • Lacks modern safety features and crash protection
  • • Handling and braking are rudimentary compared to contemporary vehicles
  • • Parts availability can be challenging for restoration and maintenance
  • • Limited performance for spirited driving
